Preparing for Uploading Files From Your Local Computer to a Remote Server
In this page we describe how to prepare for uploading a website—or individual pages and other files in a website—to a hosting server so that others around the world can view your website. We assume that you have already established a website on 000Webhost.com. In this page we:
- show how to find the FTP username generated for you automatically by 000Webhost.com
- describe how to use that FTP username generated for you automatically by 000Webhost.com to configure the program FileZilla to allow you to transfer files between your local computer and your 000Webhost.com account.
Finding the FTP Username For An Account on 000Webhost.com
To find the FTP username assigned to you by 000Webhost.com, you:
- Navigate to http://www.members.000webhost.com
- Log in to your account on 000Webhost.com using:
- the email address you entered when you created your account on 000Webhost.com as your login id
- the password you used when you created your account on 000Webhost.com
- enter the captcha (the odd shaped letters) in the proper field
- click on the Submit button, which, if you have typed your credentials properly, will bring up a new window.
- In case you have forgotten it, write down your domain name (displayed in this new window)
- Click on cpanel. This will open the cpanel window.
- Click on View Account Details in cpanel. A new window will open.
- Scroll down to the File Upload Details section.
- Write down the FTP user name assigned to you by 000Webhost.com. This is what you need to successfully configure FileZilla for file transfer.
If you need more guidance with this process, the following screen capture movie shows how to locate the FTP username for an account that has been set up on 000Webhost.com.

Using the FTP Username to Configure FileZilla for FTP Website Uploading
After you have located the FTP username assigned to you by 000Webhost.com, you can configure the FTP program FileZilla for transferring files to and from your account on 000Webhost.com and your local computer where you are creating and editing your website. To do this:
- Open FileZilla on your computer
- In the upper left corner of the FileZilla screen you will find an icon that lets you manage sites (hovering over that icon will reveal its title, which is, Open the File Site Manager). Click on that icon.
- In the window that appears, select New Site.
- Give a name for that site. You can name it anything you want, such as 000Website, Portfolio, or mySite.
- In the right panel, in the Host field type your domain name composed by you and 000Webhost.com. For example, if you chose Portfolio as your website name and 000Webhost.com assigned your chosen name to the domain site50.net, then your entire domain name is Portfolio.site50.net. That is what you type into the Host field.
- Leave the Protocol field as FTP - File Transfer Protocol
- Leave the Encryption field as Use plain FTP
- In the Login Type field, select Normal from the dropdown menu (up and down arrows in the right side of the field)
- In the User field type your email address (use the same one you used when you configured your 000Webhost account)
- In the Password field type the FTP address you were assigned by 000Webhost.com that you found in the previous section
You are now ready to use FileZilla to connect to your newly created site. You can test that this works by clicking on the Connect button at the bottom of the window in which just created the new site connection.
If you need more guidance with this process, the following screen capture movie shows how to complete these steps.

Ready to Transfer Files
At this point, if you have successfully set up FileZilla for connecting to your 000Webhost.com account, you can now begin uploading your entire website, just single pages you have modified, or new media that you have created from your own computer to the Webhost computer. You will never need to go through the setup process again unless you want to configure a new site on your 000Webhost.com host.
